Main Therapeutic Areas

In 2006, Foster® , the new Modulite® - based fixed combination of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting ß2 agonists developed for asthma and COPD, was launched in Germany for initial indications. At the moment, the drug had already been mutually approved in fifteen European countries and enrollment in the clinicalf trial in COPD is in progress.
Starting from the idea of reducing global pollution by limiting CFC propellants which cause damage to the ozone layer in the stratosphere, Chiesi developed Modulite ® , a proprietary technology platform, which is based on the use of ozone-friendly HFA propellants to prepare pressured metered dose inhalers. It offers additional benefits for physicians and patients since it allows the preparation of solution formulations with
key advantages of stability, uniform dose delivery and flexibility. Through this original technology, Chiesi has been able to reformulate a number of products which are a mainstay in the therapy of asthmatic and COPD patients. In 2006, Modulite® technology was awarded
the Frost & Sullivan Award for Technology Innovation.
Beclometasone dipropionate HFA, approved in most European countries is also marketed in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Russia. When Budesonide HFA was first launched in Germany in 2003, it was directly responsible for the phasing-out of existing CFC budesonide products in that market. Later on, it was launched in Slovakia, Spain and Ita (licensed to Novartis). In addition, a number of marketing
authorizations have been obtained in other European countries.
Atimos® /Forair® (formoterol HFA), already marketed in Italy and Germany, was launched in the UK and in France will soon be available in other European countries. Chiesi has an international licensing and supply agreement with Novartis Pharma for this innovative product.

Cardiovascular Area
Manidipine, a third-generation calcium channel blocker first launched in Italy (Iperten® ) and Brazil (Manivasc® ), is currently Chiesi’s main antihypertensive drug. Following
the successful market introduction of manidipine in Spain and Greece in 2003, the product was launched in France and Germany in 2004, in Tunisia in 2005, and was also marketed in Morocco in 2006. Chiesi’s portfolio in hypertension was broadened further in 2006 with the introduction on the market of an innovative fixed combination: manidipine plus delapril (Vivace® , Hipertil® ), launched in Brazil and Germany.

Muscolo-skeletal/Inflammation Area
Piroxicam beta-cyclodextrin (Brexin® , Brexidol® , Cycladol ® ) is one of the Company’s flagship products. This non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) was developed by Chiesi and is currently marketed in more than fifty countries.

Special Care Area
Chiesi pays particular attention to rare diseases that, due to their limited prevalence, often do need therapeutic resources. Conditions such as respiratory distress syndrome in premature children, cystic fibrosis, thalassemia and Huntington’s chorea have a dramatic impact on the lives of patients and require specific treatments that Chiesi researches and develops with special commitment.
Curosurf® (poractant alpha) is a natural surfactant of porcine origin indicated in the treatment of Neonatal Respiratory Distress Syndrome, one of the major causes
of morbidity and mortality in premature infants.
Curosurf® , one of Chiesi’s proprietary products developed in cooperation with the Karolinska Institutet of Stockholm, is available in over 50 countries, including
most of Europe and the US, and is the current world leader.
Bramitob® (aerosolised tobramycin) has demonstrated its effectiveness in improving lung function, reducing hospitalisation and intravenous antibiotic use in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patients.
